Job description

The role is based in the Strategic Assessments team. We undertake simulation modelling, operational analysis and technical studies in support of the UK submarine fleet.

We also manage and operate our own IT system which provides us with the tools we need to conduct the numerical work that underpins our assessments.

Your time will be split between two roles.

As a Cyber Security Coordinator, you will be expected to:
  • provide management and coordination of the Information Assurance activities associated with SSPAGs IT system;
  • develop assurance processes for Information Security ensuring the protection of classified information held on SSPAGs IT system.

An an Analyst, you will be expected to:
  • use, understand and develop bespoke software tools to conduct analysis relating to submarine performance to support both current operations and future procurement decisions.

Flexible and condensed working patterns can be considered for this post but, due to security constraints, the role is not suitable for hybrid working. Candidates are encouraged to discuss options with the recruiting line manager before submitting an application.

Person specification

We are looking for someone with a strong scientific or technical background who has a good understanding of cybersecurity and some experience in numerical modelling. Due to the diversity of technical knowledge required for this role, it is essential that you can assimilate information covering a broad range of topics and learn new skills with limited supervision.

The candidate must have:
  • a degree (or equivalent) in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths) or other highly numerate subject;
  • experience in programming in any widely-used programming language, e.g. Python, Matlab, C++, Fortran;
  • experience in information / cyber security / assurance;
  • experience in the use of data analysis tools;
  • experience in acquiring new skills/knowledge with limited supervision

We will consider all candidates who meet the above essential criteria. Although not essential, it would also be desirable for the candidate to have:
  • experience in solving complex technical problems;
  • experience with Microsoft Windows Server in a business environment;
  • experience with networking on Windows OS.

Qualifications

Selection process details

This vacancy is using Success Profiles (opens in a new window) , and will assess your Behaviours and Experience.

Candidates will be required to complete an online Verbal test.

The Civil Service Judgement Test is not bankable and therefore must be taken on every vacancy where it is applied.

Should you be invited to complete the online tests, please allow sufficient time to complete the tests and the remainder of the full application form; only candidates who are successful at the test stage will be invited to complete the remainder of the application by clicking Submit Application. Your application must be completed by 23:55 on the closing date of the vacancy. Late submissions cannot be accepted. The tests are not timed, as they work by giving you harder questions if you answer the previous question correctly, and easier if you get it wrong. You should allow up to an hour for each test, and each test must be completed before you will be invited to complete the second part of your application. Candidates that reach the minimum required pass mark will have their results saved as a banked score against the following tests:

New Civil Service Verbal Test

New Civil Service Numerical Test

When a candidate has a banked score theyre not asked to re-take the same test providing it is set at the same level. Scores will be banked for a 6 month period from the date of test completion. If a candidate is invited to take the same test against multiple vacancies, the banked score will be recognised against all vacancies and all active applications will progress.

CSJT scores cannot be banked as each test is generated from the behaviours required for a specific role which will vary between recruitment campaigns.
