Job overview

We are seeking a Consultant psychiatrist to join the Primary Care Liaison Service in Swindon. The post is an established post which has become vacant due to the previous incumbent moving to another service within AWP. The post involves working as the Primary Care Liaison consultant for a single CMHT catchment are in Swindon.

The post holder will provide clinical leadership in the team, help triage referrals, assess patients and make recommendations on care, provide advice to colleagues on assessment and management, liaising and working closely with the Intensive Service, Community Mental Health Team and Primary Care. The consultant will work closely with the PCLS Manager to ensure that safe, efficient and high-quality service is delivered by the Team. The Consultant will also provide clinical supervision and management supervision for doctors reporting to them.

Main duties of the job

The Consultant will deliver advice to service users including undertaking assessments, anddetermining the most appropriate service provision to meet identified needs, including briefinterventions where required. • The Consultant will supervise any medical staff providing inputinto the service. Work collaboratively with the Recovery, Intensive and Inpatient Services tofacilitate transitions through the care pathway • The Consultant is expected to contribute tothe development of services in line with best practice and nationally accredited standards. • The post holder will be expected to support the senior management to and participate instrategic development both within the local service and the wider Trust. • The Consultant willalso be expected to provide leadership to their Team. • The Consultant is expected to respondto Advice and Guidance requests within 3-5 working days in accordance with the PCLSStandard Operating Procedure. The requestors will primarily be GP, ARRS' Workers, RMN'sbased in GP surgeries, and at times, although scarce, other medical specialists based in Acuteand Community Hospitals. • Regular attendance at the PCLS Team MDT meetings. • To supportand participate in Clinical Governance and Audit • To maintain competence to provide coverfor supervision of ECT junior doctor rota (along with all other consultants). To provide medicaland AC responsibility for patients within PCLS caseload from designated GP practices

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MB BS or equivalent medical qualification


Desirable criteria
  • Relevant Higher Degree e.g MD,PHD,Msc or other additional clinical qualifications
  • MRCPsych OR MRCPsych equivalent approved by the Royal College of Psychiatrists.


Eligibility

Essential criteria
  • Fully registered with the GMC with a licence to practise at the time of appointment
  • Included on the GMC Specialist Register OR within six months of gaining CCT
  • Approved clinician status OR able to achieve within 3 months of appointment
  • Approved under S12 OR able to achieve with 3 months of appointment


Desirable criteria
  • CCT in General Adult Psychiatry


Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of assessing and treating patients in an inpatient/community setting.


Personal Skills

Essential criteria
  • To possess leadership skills and be able to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team.
  • Ability to manage own time, workload and prioritise clinical work
  • Able to demonstrate excellent communication skills, in order to effectively work with patients, carers and staff.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills


Clinical Skills

Essential criteria
  • Ability to assess and treat psychiatric problems in Adults of working age and to deal with crisis situations.
  • Specific skills in working with people with long term conditions, treatment-resistance, and multiple co-morbidities across a range of therapeutic modalities


Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Understanding of the management skills required to function successfully as a Consultant.
  • Awareness of current issues in mental health service provision, policy and legislation
  • An understanding of the importance of Clinical Governance in NHS organisations and importance in patient care


Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of alternatives to inpatient admission care approaches
  • Excellent knowledge of diverse range of interventions


Teaching

Essential criteria
  • Commitment to and experience of undergraduate and postgraduate learning and teaching.
  • Understand principles of teaching.


Desirable criteria
  • Experience as an Educational Supervisor for trainees
  • Evidence of organisation of further teaching programmes in medical education or multi-professional education
  • Post Graduate qualification in teaching


Research and Audit

Essential criteria
  • Experience or involvement in a research project and publication.
  • Experience of carrying out an audit project.
  • Ability to supervise junior medical staff undertaking research projects


Desirable criteria
  • Ability to critically appraise published research
  • Published audit project


Management

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of management/leadership skills training.
  • Evidence of management/leadership skills training
  • Ability to identify, assess and manage risk


Desirable criteria
  • Previous management experience including that of other junior medical staff
