Job summaryApplications are invited for an enthusiastic lower limb arthroplasty surgeon colleague to join our friendly department at the Gateshead NHS Foundation Trust. This is a substantive appointment.
An opportunity has arisen at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Gateshead to appoint a new member of the team to address the demand for lower limb arthroplasty surgery. The appointed surgeon will be competent to perform primary lower limb arthroplasties such as primary total hip replacement, primary total knee replacement and unicondylar knee replacement, following fellowship training in lower limb arthroplasty. We currently plan to increase the proportion of day case procedures, and we anticipate that the appointed surgeon will participate in this work stream.
Main duties of the jobThe appointed candidate will have a firm grasp of common trauma presentations, ideally with fellowship training in orthopaedic trauma. Ideally the appointed candidate will have an additional interest in managing paediatric trauma as part of the local hub and spoke network for paediatric trauma.
The successful candidate will be based at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Gateshead with occasional off-site clinics. Gateshead is a short commute to the vibrant city of Newcastle and has the added attraction of being close to the Northumberland Coast and the Lake District in Cumbria.
The department consists of 10 full time and two part-time consultants, 9 middle grades, 3 surgical care practitioners and one surgical assistant. 3 ST trainees are allocated to our unit as well as 2 core trainees. Currently 9 full-time consultants take part in a 1:9 on call rota and this post will include on call commitments.
About usBased in the North East of England we provide a range of hospital and community health services from our leading facilities, including the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Blaydon urgent care centre and Bensham Hospital, all within Gateshead.

We now employ around 4,800 staff and currently provide 444 hospital beds across the Gateshead region.
Our values should be the 'golden thread' which runs through everything we do - they are the core of who we are. Our five values can easily be remembered by the simple acronym
ICORE; Innovation, Care, Openness, Respect, Engagement. We have a number of staff networks including the Global Ethnic Majority (GEM) network, D-Ability network, LGBTQ+ Network and the Women's Network, to challenge us and help us to constantly improve. Our Armed Forces network is one of our emerging networks.
The health and wellbeing of our staff is one of our highest priorities, and we offer a range of support and initiatives as part of our 'Balance' programme balancegateshead.com to cater for our diverse workforce, so that your individual needs can be supported, allowing you a happy and healthy working experience with us.
