Job summary

We are looking for an enthusiastic, motivated primarycare Ophthalmology Consultant required to cover medical Glaucoma but willing tocover general Ophthalmology, as required by the department to join our dedicated and professionalmulti-disciplined ophthalmic team.

You will be a highly valued member of the team bringingyour expertise and skills to a busy Ophthalmology department. Thepost will be complementary to the current sub-specialty interests of MedicalRetina, Neuro-Ophthalmology, Uveitis, Paediatric Ophthalmology, Strabismus andCornea.

The service is supported by Specialist Doctors, SpecialtyDoctors, Orthoptists and Specialist Nurses.

This is a consultant post at 1.0 WTE includingad hoc theatre session(s), outpatient clinics, admin and SPA. Part time positions will also be accepted.Thispost does have an on-call requirement: First on call one night a week 5-9pm andsecond on call 1:4 Weekends - 9am to 9pm.

This is a very exciting time to join theOphthalmology Department at Barnsley Hospital as the department has recentlymoved to the Alhambra Outpatients Department in the Barnsley town centre. TheTrust plans to significantly invest in the redesign of the service over thenext three years in order to deliver an efficient, patient-centred, one-stopservice in partnership with other local providers.

Main duties of the job

You will workas part of the Ophthalmology Department and are expected to provide a high-qualityservice and ensure excellent patient care.

MainResponsibilities include:

(a)Clinical Services:

The appointed clinicianwill, together with Consultant colleagues, be responsible for the planning,delivery and improvement of clinical care in Ophthalmology at the AlhambraOutpatients.

Workclosely with the multidisciplinary teams to provide a high-quality Ophthalmologyservice.

Advise clinical colleagueson matters within his/her sphere of experience.

Liaise with other HealthCare Organisations, Social Services, General Practitioners, Voluntary Organisations and the Hospice as required.

(a)Training and Education:

Contributeto the teaching of other grades of staff,both within and outside the department,including medical staff,nurses, paramedical staffand scientific and technical staff.

(c)Clinical Governance

Thepost-holder will be expected to demonstrate continuing improvements to thequality of service provided within the framework of the Trusts ClinicalGovernance arrangements. This willinclude:

(d)Management

Tocontribute towards the achievement of the Trusts corporate objectives andstrategic direction.

Tocontribute to the management process within the Trust through participation inplanning, project or liaisongroups as appropriate.
