To provide clinical expertise in line with agreed job plan. This will include specialist paediatric work in clinic and neonatal unit for retinopathy of prematurity, adult motility and cataract surgery.

You will be responsible for the patients under your care which includes those being seen by your team. The post will include working with the whole team and the wider department and being available for internal as well as external referrals.

The post will include an eye emergency department session depending on job plan and training route. There might be a need to cover other sessions on an ad hoc basis depending on the needs of the department. There is a requirement to keep up to date with ophthalmic practice.

The post holder will be expected to abide by the GMC good medical practice guidelines.

Person specification

Education & Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • On GMC's register with a Licence to Practice or eligible to apply for GMC registration and a Licence to Practice
  • On GMC's Specialist Register or within six months of being admitted to the register by the date of the interviews or eligible for specialist registration
  • MBBS
  • FRCOphth or equivalent
  • CCST or within 6 months by date of interview, or held on GMC Register (ophthalmology)


Management skills

Essential criteria
  • Able to take responsibility, show leadership, make decisions, exert appropriate authority
  • Have proven skills in leading, motivating, developing and managing the performance of colleagues.
  • Knowledge of finance/budgets
  • Management of staff
  • Recognised leadership training


Teaching & Training

Essential criteria
  • Experience of teaching and training ophthalmology trainees, medical students, nurses, and GPs
  • Completed courses for training trainers trained in educational and clinical supervision


Academic achievements

Essential criteria
  • Publications in peer reviewed ophthalmic journals related to Paediatrics
  • Experience in research projects.


Language

Essential criteria
  • Candidates are able to speak and write English to the appropriate standard necessary to fulfil the job requirements


Audit

Essential criteria
  • Understanding of principles of clinical audit
  • Understanding of clinical governance


Knowledge/ skills

Essential criteria
  • Specialist training (fellowship) in - Paediatrics
  • Experience in paediatric surgery
  • Experience in ROP screening
  • Experience in strabismus surgery
