Person specification

Attainments

Essential criteria

• Medical Degree
• Full registration and licence to practice with the General Medical Council (GMC)
• Membership of Royal College of Physicians (MRCP) UK or equivalent
• Within 6 months of receiving CCST in Geriatric Medicine / Acute Internal Medicine / General Internal Medicine

Desirable criteria

• Postgraduate qualification or additional certification relevant to speciality
• Member of the British Geriatrics Society

Domestic / Physical

Essential criteria

• Resident within a reasonable travel time to the hospital or equivalent access

Personal Attributes

Essential criteria

• Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team
• Enquiring, critical approach to problems
• Good interpersonal skills
• Caring attitude to patients in line with NHS values
• Ability to communicate effectively with patients, relatives, GPs, nurses and other agencies
• Commitment to continuing own Medical Education
• Willingness to undertake additional responsibilities at local, regional or national levels

Teaching & Research

Essential criteria

• Interest in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching
• Ability to teach clinical and procedural skills
• Ability to supervise a range of junior clinical staff
• Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical problems

Desirable criteria

• Postgraduate qualification in Medical Education
• Ability to supervise postgraduate research
• Publications in peer reviewed journals

Management & Administration

Essential criteria

• Ability to organise and manage outpatient priorities and waiting lists
• Ability to manage and lead a team
• Ability to play a leadership role in developing medical services

Desirable criteria

• Understanding of key issues in the interface between secondary and primary / intermediate care

Professional Interests & Experience

Essential criteria

• Specialist interest in one or more areas of Geriatric Medicine
• Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients
• Active and ongoing interest in research and audit

Training

Essential criteria

• Compliant with training as required by the Royal College of Physicians
• Formal Specialist Registrar training in Geriatric and General Medicine
