Barts Health NHS Trust is seeking an enthusiastic and experienced Consultant in Complex Spine Surgery to join our expanding multidisciplinary spinal service based at The Royal London Hospital.

This is a substantive post with a particular focus on spinal trauma, including a Spinal Trauma Subspecialty Lead role and dedicated trauma clinics. The successful candidate will contribute to the development of a consultant-led spinal trauma rota within one of the UK's busiest Major Trauma Centres.

Main duties of the job

You will join a large, collaborative team of orthopaedic and neurosurgical spinal consultants delivering high-quality care across adult and paediatric populations. The service provides complex trauma, paediatric deformity, elective spinal surgery, and tertiary referrals across North East London.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide comprehensive adult and paediatric emergency spinal surgery, including instrumented trauma, MSCC and spinal infections.
• Participate in the 1:9 24/7 Consultant-of-the-Week rota (Category A).
• Lead and develop spinal trauma pathways and governance.
• Deliver elective spinal surgery across Barts Health sites.
• Supervise trainees, fellows and extended scope practitioners.
• Contribute to MDTs, governance, service development and research activity.

Qualifications

Essential criteria

• Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or CESR (CP) - proposed CCT/CESR (CP) date must be within 6 months of interview or CESR/Portfolio pathway, or alternative routes to specialist registration
• Full GMC Registration

Desirable criteria

• Doctorate or Masters level research degree or equivalent

Experience

Essential criteria

• Experience in Major Trauma Centre on call for spines
• Complex Spine Fellowship training.
• Service development

Desirable criteria

• Experience of working as Complex Spine Consultant

Knowledge

Essential criteria

• Clinical expertise in complex instrumented spines
• Ability to offer an expert clinical opinion on a range of elective and emergency problems
• Full independent responsibility for clinical care of patients.
• Instrumented trauma service for adult spines

Desirable criteria

• ATLS
• Experience in teaching clinical skills to undergraduates

Skills

Essential criteria

• Spine Navigation
• Spine Robotics
• Teamwork, interpersonal, and communication skills
• Presentation and teaching skills for undergraduates and postgraduates

Desirable criteria

• Active involvement in developing departmental research infrastructure
• Ability to organise academic meetings within the area of interest.
• Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education
• Evidence of leading quality improvement and service development projects

Other

Essential criteria

• Experience of research and presentations to relevant surgical societies
• Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical/surgical problems
• Commitment to continuing medical education
• Ability to work under pressure and take decisions

Desirable criteria

• Ability to supervise postgraduate research
• Take on additional professional responsibilities at regional/national levels
