Detailed job description and main responsibilities The exact job plan will be agreed between the Divisional Operations Director, the Divisional Director and the post holder, and its structure could differ between both hospitals.
The position is advertised as 10 PAs (8.5 DCC+1.5 SPA) where additional SPAs can be considered depending on additional roles undertaken. The option of flexible and Less than Full Time working is already well established in the department. Additional SPAs are routinely allocated for additional responsibilities, such as educational supervision.
Half day, full day, late shifts and weekend clinical shifts may all be considered within job planning and arranged in a way to suit the post holder and the needs of the department.
Shifts include Monday to Friday:
- 0800-1600 (most shifts)
- 1200-2000
- Two consultants prefer long days 0800-2000
Shifts may be fixed or rotated to suit personal circumstance. Job plans may be weekly or annualised at a 40-week baseline (320 clinical PAs per year). The majority of shifts can be taken during normal working hours and there is currently opportunity to work additional shifts via the Trust bank, should the post holder so desire, giving the opportunity for a considerable uplift in salary.
The work pattern is very likely to continue to evolve over time to ensure that the service matches the demand. We will always carefully negotiate any changes to an individual's job plan to ensure that they maintain their flexibility.
Person specificationEducation Essential criteria - MBBS or equivalent
- MRCP or inclusion on the specialist medicine with General Medicine accreditation
- Full GMC Registration and license to practice
Desirable criteria - Higher qualification (MD, PhD)
- Valid ALS Certificate
Experience Essential criteria - Completed training programme in General or Acute Medicine
- Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on the full range of problems in adult acute general medicine
- Ability to remain calm and work effectively, under pressure environment
- Able to organize and prioritize workload
Leadership/Management Essential criteria - Evidence of management experience and/or training
- Good IT Skills
- Evidence of knowledge of NHS structure, and current NHS "5 year forward plan"
Desirable criteria - Experience in service development
- Attendance on Management course
Communication Skills Essential criteria - Effective written (including record keeping) and verbal communication skills
- Fluent in verbal and written English
- Awareness and respect for colleagues, patients and relatives dignity, privacy, integrity, cultural and religious beliefs
Teaching Essential criteria - Knowledge and Ability to teach all grades of doctors and medical students
Desirable criteria - Educational and Clinical Supervisor Course
Clinical governance Essential criteria - Able to demonstrate successful participation in clinical governance activities
Desirable criteria - Participation in relevant national Audits
- Recent published clinical research in peer reviewed journal
