Detailed job description and main responsibilities

This post is for a paediatric consultant in Community Paediatrics. The successful candidate will become part of a team of 7 whole-time equivalent consultants delivering community paediatric services.

Person specification

Qualifications and Skills

Essential criteria
  • MRCPCH or equivalent higher qualification
  • Full GMC Registration
  • MBChB/MBBS or equivalent
  • Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) (the proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of the interview)
  • European Community Rights APLS or EPLS or PALS provider
  • Success in Intercollegiate specialty examination or overseas equivalent or specialty accreditation if acquired prior to introduction of such examinations.


Desirable criteria
  • Further Higher Degree, e.g. MD, PhD
  • Level 3 safeguarding training


Clinical Experience

Essential criteria
  • Clinical training and experience in general and community paediatrics equivalent to that required for UK CCT in community paediatrics.
  • Level 3 Child protection.
  • Experience in managing paediatric patients with disabilities and their associated medical problems.
  • Willing to work unsupervised and make decisions.
  • Experience of working in a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Ability to take full and independent responsibility for the clinical care of patients.
  • Experience and understanding of clinical audit.
  • Ability to use evidence base and clinical audit to support decision making
  • Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on range of problems both emergency and elective within specialty.
  • Ability to manage and lead a paediatric team
  • Training in standardised developmental assessments; e.g. Bayleys, Griffiths or SOGS
  • Experience of supervising junior medical staff.
  • Ability to teach clinical skills.
  • Commitment to continuing medical education.


Desirable criteria
  • Experience in other areas relevant to child health, e.g. general practice, child mental health, public health
  • Management course.
  • Training the trainers course.


Management and Administrative Experience

Essential criteria
  • Ability to take responsibility, lead, make decisions and respond appropriately to service needs
  • Ability to advise on efficient and smooth running of paediatric service
  • Good understanding of the structure and processes of the NHS
  • Ability to advise on efficient and smooth running of paediatric service
  • Experience and understanding of clinical audit


Desirable criteria
  • Formal management training
  • Evidence of managerial experience
  • Evidence of initiating change through the audit process
  • Leadership qualification


Teaching Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of supervising junior medical staff
  • Ability and commitment to teach clinical skills
  • Commitment to continuing medical education
  • Experience of teaching basic skills to undergraduate medical students


Desirable criteria
  • Training the trainer's course
  • Higher medical education qualification


Research Experience

Essential criteria
  • Ability to collect and submit data for collaborative studies as required
  • Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical practice


Desirable criteria
  • Awareness of current speciality specific developments, initiatives and issues
  • Proven research ability including publications in refereed journals

  • Good leadership skills and people management skills
  • Willingness to work flexibly to deliver a safe and patient centred service • flexibility
  • Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team and develop effective working relationships with all levels of staff and staff from both within on outside the paediatric service

Personal Circumstances

Essential criteria
  • Ability and means to meet the travel requirements of the post
  • Residence allowing return to base within 30 minutes if required
  • To be accessible by telephone for on call duties
