Job description

Post No. POSN005409 - Communications Officer

We're looking for a creative, confident communications professional to join Newport City Council's busy corporate communications team. This is a varied role where no two days are the same: you'll create engaging content, respond to fast-moving issues and help tell the story of the council, its services and the city.

Working at the heart of the organisation, you'll provide trusted communications advice and support to senior officers, elected members and council services. You'll focus on essential services, resident-facing communications, media relations and sensitive corporate issues, helping to build trust and protect and strengthen the reputation of the council and Newport.

What you'll be doing

• Tell compelling stories: Create clear, targeted content that brings council services and priorities to life for residents and other audiences.
• Lead on media relations: Respond confidently to journalist enquiries, spot opportunities and build strong relationships with local media.
• Connect through digital channels: Plan and deliver social media campaigns, create engaging content and use public feedback to inform our approach.
• Communicate when it matters most: Support senior leaders with timely, accurate messaging during emergencies, major disruptions and other fast-moving situations.
• Be a trusted adviser: Build effective relationships with senior officers, elected members and service managers, offering clear advice on media handling, messaging, reputation and sensitive issues.

What you'll bring

• Relevant experience: A strong track record in a fast-paced communications, PR or journalism role, including managing reactive issues, competing priorities and tight deadlines. Public sector experience is welcome but not essential.
• Excellent communication skills: You write with clarity and impact, communicate confidently and know how to adapt your approach for different audiences and channels.
• Sound judgement: You're confident handling media enquiries, building relationships and navigating sensitive or reputational issues.
• Digital confidence: You're comfortable using social media scheduling tools, content management systems and basic design software.
• A collaborative mindset: You're organised, calm under pressure and motivated by the opportunity to make a positive difference through public service.

We welcome applications for all our jobs in either Welsh or English. An application submitted in Welsh will not be treated less favourably than an application submitted in English.

Newport City Council is committed to working towards its workforce being more representative of the population that we serve and particularly welcomes applications from people from minority ethnic communities represented (or living) in the city. Selection will be made on ability and skills to undertake the role.

Newport City Council is not currently supporting applicants with sponsorship for right to work. In applying for a vacancy, applicants should already have the right to work in the UK.
