Job overview

Band 7 Chief Cardiac Physiologist - Echocardiography

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a dynamic, motivated, and conscientious Echocardiographer to join the Cardiac Physiology team at Barts Health NHS Trust on a 12-month fixed-term contract. The successful candidate will work across The Royal London Hospital and Newham Hospital, gaining exposure to a broad range of cardiac pathologies, specialised services, and diverse clinical presentations.

Our Echocardiography Department is the first in the UK to hold accreditation from both the British Society of Echocardiography (BSE) and the European Association of Cardiovascular Imaging (EACVI). This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Echocardiographer seeking to further develop their career within a highly regarded and progressive department.

The role offers exposure to a highly diverse and complex caseload, including tertiary and regional referrals received through our Major Trauma Centre and specialist cardiology services. This provides valuable experience in advanced echocardiographic assessment of complex cardiac pathology, structural heart disease, and specialist imaging pathways, supporting the development of expertise beyond that typically encountered in a district general hospital setting.

Main duties of the job

The post includes participation in the weekend service, comprising either:
10 full weekends per year (Saturday and Sunday), or
15 weekends per year, working either a Saturday or Sunday, depending on service requirements and rota arrangements

An experienced Chief Cardiac Physiologist/Highly Specialised Echocardiographer/Cardiac Scientist must work competently in a busy Echocardiography Department. The post-holder will be required to perform unsupervised complex-level tasks and assist senior staff as needed. The post holder must be able to rotate between Royal London Hospital and Newham Hospital. They will also be required to cover weekend rotation for delivering a 7-day NHS service, working minimum 10 weekends per year (Saturday and Sunday) or 15 weekends of either a Saturday or Sunday. The post-holder will be required to work autonomously as a senior staff member within the non-invasive Cardiac Diagnostics department, assisting senior staff with managerial tasks. In addition, the post-holder will be required to supervise, train, guide, and support staff in performing their roles and support senior staff members.
