Job description

Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust is the only acute hospital provider in the Mid and South Essex Integrated Care System (ICS), which is a system of health and care partners working together for our local population.

Within Mid and South Essex there are 149 GP practices, operating from over 200 sites, forming 27 Primary Care Networks and one Ambulance Trust. There are also three main community and mental health service providers who work together through a community collaborative.

We collaborate with other valuable partners, including three Healthwatch organisations, nine voluntary and community sector organisations and three top tier local authorities, with seven district, borough and city councils, as well as our local universities.

Job overview

Looking for a new challenge? This is an exciting opportunity for a dynamic and forward-thinking Band 6 Charge Nurse to join our Paediatric Emergency Department team.

We are seeking an enthusiastic, proactive, and highly motivated individual who can demonstrate excellent communication, organisational, and clinical skills, supported by previous experience within a paediatric emergency care setting. We pride ourselves on providing a supportive working environment, committed to delivering high-quality patient care while actively promoting staff development and progression.

The successful candidate will work collaboratively alongside the Paediatric Assessment Unit (PAU) and Neptune Paediatric Ward. The PAU is a 7-bedded unit, currently co-located within Neptune Ward, which comprises 16 inpatient beds.

There is an exciting development plan within the footprint for the Paediatric Assessment Unit (PAU), with a purpose-built area to enable PAU services to be co-located alongside the Paediatric Emergency Department which is set to open in Autumn 2026. This innovative design will enhance patient flow, improve access to care, and strengthen collaborative working across services.

Main duties of the job

If successful, you will be expected to demonstrate the ability to effectively manage the paediatric emergency department (ED) environment and patient care during a shift, including the coordination of staff and resources.

You will support your colleagues and work alongside the Nurse in Charge to ensure the delivery of safe, high-quality, holistic care, while maintaining effective patient flow. This will require clear communication and close collaboration with other areas across the paediatric directorate.

You will uphold professional and clinical standards at all times, acting as a positive role model and supporting the development of others within the team.

Working for our organisation

Our ambition is to deliver excellent local and specialist services, to improve the health and well-being of our patients, and provide a vibrant place for staff to develop, innovate and build careers.

We aim to make the most of our skills and experiences so we can become the best we can be. As one organisation we will recruit the finest and retain more specialist staff due to more employment opportunities across our Trust.
