ABOUT THE ROLE

This is a full time role working an approved Day or Night shift pattern including weekends, bank holidays and institutional closure day. This role also attracts an additional annual £1,000 shift allowance.

You will contribute to the provision of an efficient and effective University- wide Security service through involvement in control room duties, crime prevention, uniformed and plain clothes patrols, emergency response and general security duties.

Some of the key responsibilities are -
  • Specific duties will vary from time to time; the following list is intended to indicate the general nature of the post and is not exhaustive.
  • Crime Prevention, Patrols and Emergency Response.
  • Identifying, assessing and responding to crime prevention issues including buildings and property.
  • Providing advice to victims or potential victims of crime, including reporting of any issues/defects which affect the safety and security of people and property.
  • Conducting foot and mobile patrols in uniform or plain clothes in order to prevent crime, vandalism/damage to property and breaches of the peace, including:
  • Surveillance activity (including the use of CCTV overt and covert)
  • Building checks
  • Opening and closing buildings
  • Identify hazards/problems

    ABOUT THE TEAM

    The post holder will be principally located at the main campus in the centre of Newcastle. However, they will be expected to attend all University Sites including Coach Lane Campus, the London Campus and any other properties or partners sites as required by the University. The role can be fast paced, challenging at times whilst also being very rewarding. We work within a team environment, across various shift patterns and engage within both our University community across numerous faculties & services & external partners & agencies.

    The University of Northumbria Security Service, part of Campus Services, aims to work with students, staff and visitors to provide a safe and secure residential and working environment.
    • Protecting Staff, Students and Visitors
    • Protecting Research Facilities, Teaching Facilities and Accommodation
    • Supporting pastoral care for students and staff
    • Engaging with the wider community
    • Supporting risk management and planning arrangements
    • Promoting Crime awareness and preventing crime
    • Implementing professional standards and good practice guidelines
    • Communicating and liaising with Faculties and other service providers in the institution
    • Disseminating management statistics, to inform decision making

    How do we achieve our aims:
    • The Use of Physical Security Measures, including Building Alarms, Fire Alarms, Access Control and CCTV
    • Providing a 24 hour, 365 days a year staffed control room.
    • The monitoring of and response to Fire alarms, building alarms, Intruder Alarms, Lift Alarms IT Server Room Alarms
    • Provision of a Crime Prevention Team for Target Hardening and Supporting Major and or High Profile Events
    • A one stop out of hours call point for dealing with all emergencies
    • Provision of Uniformed and Plain Clothes Security Officers

    ABOUT YOU

    To be successful in the role you will have:
    • Knowledge of basic law enforcement
    • Knowledge of Crime Prevention
    • Excellent customer service skills
    • The ability to produce accurate reports
    • Experience in the use of Security systems including CCTV, intruder & fire alarms
