Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To competently carry out general, fluoroscopy and theatre imaging examinations. To undertake vascular +/- cardiac imaging with some understanding of the role.

To ensure that all examinations are justified as per the IR(ME)R 2000 Regulations and fulfil the role of operator. To minimise radiation dose levels as low as reasonably practicable.

To display a high degree of precision and hand eye coordination to produce accurate images in a timely manner.

To participate in the "out of hours" emergency service on a rota basis. Including working single-handed to maintain radiographic cover cross hospital, inclusive of Accident Service and the Operating Theatres. To provide first line advice to medical and nursing staff on imaging procedures during emergency hours. To carry and respond to the emergency bleep.

To ensure integrity of data quality on the computer systems and report errors to appropriate lead person.

To be responsible for a specific aspect of the X-ray department. This will include the practical and theoretical training of staff and students in this area.

To be responsible for the safe use of expensive specialised equipment. This will entail monitoring and maintaining in good working order. Evaluate the problem, and report any faults to a more senior radiographer.

To participate in departmental research and audit.

To regularly participate in the department's quality control procedures including reject analysis and equipment testing.

To maintain a high level of professionalism and adhering to departmental rules and policies at all times.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • BSc Radiography (Hons) or Diploma of College of Radiographers (or equivalent)
  • Certificate in cannulation
  • HCPC Registered


Desirable criteria
  • Commencement of study to P.G.DIP level


Experience

Essential criteria
  • Extensive experience of working in an acute hospital
  • Extensive experience in specialised modality practice
  • Extensive experience in interventional radiology
  • Experience working (or clear knowledge of role) in Cardiac catheterisation or vascular Lab.


Desirable criteria
  • Experience within the NHS


Communication Skills

Essential criteria
  • Able to communicate highly complex and sensitive information to patients and staff


Desirable criteria
  • Demonstrate leadership skills


Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Professional knowledge across the spectrum of cross-sectional/ specialised procedures
  • Sound scientific and technical knowledge relevant to the post - including general and cardiac catheterisation


Skills

Essential criteria
  • Skilled in performing cross-sectional/cardiac imaging
  • Ability to undertake range of both general & specialist interventional radiology examinations


Personal Skills

Essential criteria
  • Able to work flexibly and adapt to changing situations
  • Build good working relationships with colleagues within Imaging and the wider organisation
  • Pay close attention to detail
