A permanent full-time job opportunity has become available for a CEN Practitioner within the North Bristol area of the BNSSG Wide Complex Emotional Needs (CEN) Team. We are a co-produced team who work within the BNSSG area and our core aim is to improve the quality of lives of service users who experience mental health difficulties associated with Complex Emotional Needs.

We are looking for a qualified and registered healthcare professional or a qualified clinical associate psychologist to join our team to deliver care, treatment and service improvements for people seeking support for Complex Emotional Needs. This role supports the North Bristol Recovery Teams in delivering quality relational work for this client group and includes running Group Interventions within the Structured Clinical Management evidence-based treatment programme.

We require a committed, compassionate, proactive and enthusiastic individual, with previously acquired skills and knowledge in working effectively alongside people with difficulties associated with Complex Emotional Needs. They need to be reliable and offer a consistent and attuned relational clinical stance.

Main duties of the job
• Deliver Structured Clinical Management (SCM) to a caseload of up to 10 service users under the Recovery Teams.

Co-facilitate the Problem Solving Group (PSG) with an aim to become Lead facilitator.

Work alongside the Senior Practitioner in the Complex Emotional Needs Team to increase access to evidence based interventions, monitor and improve the quality of relational care provided.

Carry out post-group reviews and support thoughtful discharge planning.

Take part in service improvement and development in the area of Complex Emotional Needs for North Bristol.

Attend and positively engage with BNSSG Wide CEN team meetings, line management, clinical supervisions, appraisal, reflective practice and CPD meetings.

Co-deliver regular training as part of the BNSSG Wide CEN Service and at times across the Trust for CEN awareness.

To have an interest in the evidence-based treatments of DBT or MBT and if needed be considered for training in either if required.

We want our staff team to develop their practice and skills by learning and growing in the BNSSG Wide CEN Service. Therefore, our team has regular reflective practice.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The focus of this role is to improve the lives of service users who experience mental health difficulties associated with Complex Emotional Needs (also known as personality disorder).

The post holder would be required to deliver Structured Clinical Management (SCM) to a caseload of up to 10 service users under the North Bristol Recovery Teams and Co-facilitate the Problem Solving Group (PSG) with an aim to become Lead facilitator.

The post holder would carry out post-group reviews and support thoughtful discharge planning. Take part in service improvement and development in the area of Complex Emotional Needs for North Bristol.

They would work alongside the Senior Practitioner in the Complex Emotional Needs Team and support the Recovery Team staff to increase access to evidence based interventions, monitor and improve the relational quality of the care provided in line with personal recovery goals.

They would Co-deliver training as part of the BNSSG Wide CEN Service and attend and positively engage with BNSSG Wide CEN team meetings, supervisions, reflective practice and CPD meetings.

Always under the overarching framework of Your Team, Your Conversation, Your Plan model, the post holder will be responsible for the ongoing assessment, planning delivery and review of activities and interventions against identified health, social care and well being needs. Acting as Keyworker for a defined group of CEN service users. This maybe either on a one to one basis, or as part of a group treatment.

They would work alongside CEN service users' carers, including friends, relatives and their supporters in the community.

1. To undertake the full range of activities required to deliver ongoing comprehensive mental health assessment for service users with severe and enduring mental health Complex Emotional Needs, living in the community and in a range of settings. This will include:

The use of standardised assessment tools.

History, strengths and aspirations

Mental state

Impact of culture and diversity

Functional and daily living needs

The needs of family and carers

Evaluation of risk

Physical health and links to mental health

Complicating factors

The interventions and treatments required to enable positive change.

Social care needs

Safeguarding and public protection

Capacity under the Mental Capacity Act

2. To be responsible for developing delivering and reviewing comprehensive and complex treatment programmes using appropriate frameworks in line with evidence-based practice, including strategies to manage risk for service users with Complex Emotional Needs and carers, bringing in other resources as required.

3. To act as Keyworker (under new Your Team, Your Conversation, Your Plan model) for service users with the most complex needs, also providing defined interventions to individuals on other workers caseloads.

4. To plan, deliver and evaluate defined, specialist therapeutic interventions as indicated in the assessment process, in line with Personal Wellbeing Plans (PWP) , including to service users who maybe on other caseloads. This might include:

Individual or group therapeutic intervention including Problem Solving Group treatment

Psychological treatments such as DBT, MBT approaches, family interventions (when identified)

Psychosocial interventions

Motivational and coping enhancement strategies.

Medication management

Interventions under the Mental Health Act

5. To deliver a range of defined activities & interventions to improve the carers 'ability to support the service user and to enable them in their relationship with the service user.

6. To develop and maintain good partnership working with other services throughout all treatment episodes, including regular liaison within Primary Health Care Team, inpatient and intensive services, day services, voluntary sector and with nominated carers/advocates.

7. In collaboration with service users and carers, to be responsible for facilitating the development of formulations to share understanding of emotional/ physical and treatment needs, complex comprehensive crisis plans, rapid access plans, advance statements etc., involving other agencies such as primary care etc. where appropriate.

8. To personally build and lead others to build hope and inspiring relationships with service users, which acknowledge the personal journey of each person, and focus on strengths and aspirations to allow the creation of meaningful personal recovery plans particularly for those within Structured Clinical Management pathway.

9. To be responsible for maintaining own workload, as well as planning the workload of others (if appropriate), on a day-to-day basis, ensuring that time is prioritized effectively, utilizing of electronic resources such as diaries & scheduling.

10. To be responsible for the protection of individuals from abuse and harm in line with local safeguarding policies and procedures, including working with others in the planning development and review of protection plans, ensuring the appropriate sharing of information.

11. Coordinating and undertaking protective interventions which maybe required in the protection of others, as outlined in the protection plan, taking individual action where indicated.

12. Personally and leading others to collaboratively and sensitively work with individuals, with a range of Complex Emotional Needs. To develop skills to manage their own health, in accordance with their personal recovery plan, by actively promoting and using approaches, which are affirming, build on strengths, identify past positive experiences and success, and use small steps to move towards the person's goal.

13. Undertake active clinical leadership and supervision within the team, covering for the senior practitioner and colleagues as required.

14. To maintain the single health and social care record on RIO, ensuring both paper and electronic records are maintained in a timely way to mitigate risks and in accordance with professional and organisational standards.

15. Report and record within agreed timeframes, all activity relating to information reporting and performance requirements.

16. To participate and actively engage in line management, caseload and clinical supervision in accordance with trust policy.

17. To provide mentoring & training for others in relevant practice areas, according to professional requirements, taking a collaborative approach to practice development and evidence-based care. Specifically this means providing a safe and effective learning environment for the mentoring and supervising of students, participating in their learning objectives and assessments

18. Demonstrate responsibility for developing own practice in line with professional qualifications and for contributing to the development of others, by making use of and providing, effective feedback, supervision, coaching and appraisal.

19. Monitor and maintain health, safety and security of self and others, undertaking assessments and taking appropriate action where required.

20. Continuously develop own knowledge and practice, and contribute to the development of others, making use of available feedback, supervision and appraisal to identify appropriate areas of development for this CEN work role, taking responsibility for accessing identified learning, CPD, reflective practice and training opportunities.

21. Lead, maintain and participate in practices, which enable effective team working.

22. To participate in local arrangements in order to ensure consistent care to service users across the local geography (when required)

Person specification

Diploma level/Degree in relevant health/social care profession.

Essential criteria
  • Must be professionally registered
  • Is able to deliver from a range of possible key therapeutic interventions including Group Work, SCM, PSG, Psychosocial interventions
  • Demonstrates substantial experience of assessing risk and developing risk management strategies
  • Demonstrates post-registration experience gained working in a range of front-line adult mental health services, undertaking assessment and delivering interventions

  • Empathy for individuals who have experienced mental health problems and ability to cope with behaviour which may be challenging at times.
