Introduction

The Governors of Sir John Nelthorpe School are seeking to appoint an inspirational and aspirational individual to the position of Assistant Headteacher, with responsibility for teaching and learning. This is a key senior leadership role designed for a practitioner who understands that secure academic progress is rooted in the quality of daily classroom instruction, particularly for those who find learning most challenging.

The unique and impactful dimension of this Assistant Headteacher role is the opportunity to lead all teachers in connecting high-level pedagogical strategy directly with classroom reality. Alongside strategic whole school responsibilities, the successful candidate will actively specialise in teaching our lower and lowest ability English and Mathematics groups at key stage 3.

Key Responsibilities

• Whole-School Leadership: Lead the strategic development, implementation, and evaluation of teaching and learning policies and practice across the school to ensure consistently high standards.
• Pedagogical Modelling: Take direct teaching responsibility for the lowest-ability pupils within English and Mathematics, demonstrating strong practice and robust intervention strategies.
• Staff Development: Lead high-impact professional development, mentoring and instructional coaching to support and empower teachers across all faculties.
• Curriculum & Impact: Work collaboratively with Heads of Faculty and area and subject leaders to ensure the curriculum is effectively adapted and scaffolded for all pupils, tracking pupil data to ensure vulnerable groups make appropriate progress in order to reduce attainment and gaps between groups.

Who We Are Looking For

An individual who is a positive, aspirational and inspirational classroom teacher with a track record of securing good levels of attainment, particularly for lower-ability pupils in English or mathematics. You will possess an infectious passion for great teaching through an appreciation of cognitive science, pedagogical research, and effective adaptive teaching strategies. This position requires the person to be articulate, resilient, and capable of inspiring staff, pupils, and parents alike.
