Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • IHRIM Accredited Clinical Coder
  • Educated to A Level qualifications in sciences e.g. Biology or equivalent knowledge acquired through work based training


Desirable criteria
  • AMSPAR Certificate in Medical Terminology
  • MOST qualifications, MS Excell


Experience

Essential criteria
  • Ability to code all specialties
  • Communicate complex coding rules to clinical and non-clinical staff and external agencies
  • Experience of working as a clinical coder in the NHS
  • Use of hospital administrative and clinical systems
  • Demonstrate an understanding of clinical coding and its uses
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomical and physiological terms
  • Attendance at Clinical Coding refresher workshops

  • Analytical & judgemental skills
  • Ability to abstract relevant clinical information for coding
  • Ability to communicate complex information to clinical and administrative staff
