The Disability, Neurodiversity and Chronic Health Group at SSE

The Disability, Neurodiversity and Chronic Health group is the newest member of the belonging communities. To date, we have focused on diabetes and cervical screening Awareness Weeks. My aim is to focus on lots of different awareness events throughout the year, and if any of my colleagues would like to suggest an awareness event, they can message me and I will do my best to accommodate. Or colleagues can use the community page to raise their own awareness on anything they’d like.

A bit about me, setting up this community was close to my heart as I was diagnosed five years ago with inflammatory bowel disease. In my experience, being diagnosed with an incurable condition was a bit mindboggling to start with, there were a lot of emotions to process, and I think I probably went back and forward through the change curve for the best part of a year!! Although I now know there are millions of people affected by this condition, initially I felt quite alone which was the main reason I wanted to lead this community. My hope is that through this community, we can support each other through shared experiences. We won’t all have the same condition /disability, but the emotional and physical roller-coaster we’re on will be very similar.
