Why SWR?

Matt chose to apply for an apprenticeship with South Western Railway (SWR) due to its competitive salary, diverse range of roles, and the opportunity to relocate and begin his career in a new environment. He was particularly drawn to the flexibility and career pathways available upon completion of the programme.

Starting Out

The first month was understandably daunting. However, Matt quickly found comfort in the camaraderie of his cohort. As they settled into their roles, the support from colleagues made a significant impact. He felt welcomed and valued, with team members showing genuine interest in his development.

Growth and Development

After a year in the programme, Matt identified confidence as the skill he had developed most. Building a professional reputation required him to engage with colleagues, ask questions, and speak up when something didn’t seem right. This growth in confidence has been instrumental in shaping his career trajectory.

Advice to Future Applicants

Matt encourages others to consider the apprenticeship route, highlighting the breadth of learning—not just about the railway, but essential life skills. He emphasises the consistent support throughout the journey and expresses deep gratitude for the opportunities he’s received: "I haven’t looked back. I’m so grateful to be in the position I’m in."

🚆 Case Study: Ben’s Apprenticeship Journey with SWR

A Passion for the Railway

Ben’s motivation to apply for an apprenticeship at South Western Railway stemmed from hearing about the positive experiences of previous apprentices. With a longstanding interest in joining the railway, he saw the apprenticeship route as the perfect opportunity to gain hands-on experience while earning and learning.

Settling In

Ben’s first month was marked by strong support and a structured introduction. The initial company induction provided insight into SWR’s values and vision, followed by focused sessions with the apprenticeship team in Southampton. Although he felt nervous at first, the welcoming environment and clear guidance quickly helped him feel at ease and confident that he was in the right place.

Skills and Growth

After a year in the programme, Ben highlights communication and confidence as the most significant areas of personal development. Exposure to colleagues across all levels of the business, along with encouragement to share his views, helped him grow professionally and feel empowered to contribute meaningfully.

A Broader Perspective

Ben encourages future applicants to look beyond the frontline roles often associated with the railway. He discovered that thousands of staff work behind the scenes to keep operations running smoothly—an aspect of the industry he hadn’t fully appreciated before. "An apprenticeship is an incredible route in. You get to explore departments you didn’t even know existed, but that are vital to SWR’s success."

Together, these stories showcase the transformative impact of SWR’s apprenticeship programme - not just professionally, but personally. If you’re interested in kickstarting your career with an apprenticeship, SWR could be for you.
