Sustainability at SWR

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is crucial for South Western Railway (SWR) because it enhances our company’s reputation, fosters trust with passengers, and contributes to the sustainability of the communities we serve.

By focusing on environmental initiatives, such as reducing carbon emissions and promoting eco-friendly travel options, we are aligned with broader societal concerns about climate change. Additionally, CSR efforts have shown to improve employee engagement and attract socially conscious travellers. Community involvement and accessibility projects including our Customers and Communities Improvement Fund (CCIF)  helps us to build goodwill, supporting the long-term viability of rail travel in the region while demonstrating a commitment to responsible corporate governance.

As seen in our Sustainability Strategy ‘Journey to a Better Future’ we have three pillar which underpin everything we do. These are Better for our Planet, People and Places. To find out more information, please follow this link

Our plan on a page - South Western Railway

Watch the following video featuring scenes at Clapham Depot, where a once-abandoned marshalling yard – last used in the 1980s – has been transformed into a thriving biodiversity and wellness garden.

Built using recycled railway materials, this green space is now home to flowers, bird boxes, a pond, and even vegetable beds – all created by our colleagues to attract wildlife and promote wellbeing.

It’s just one example of how we’re turning disused spaces into havens for nature and people alike. Through projects like this, we’re making real progress toward our goal of being biodiversity net positive by 2030.

Have you ever wondered what happens to coffee cups you throw away on a train?

For WorldEnvironmentDay, we are following their journey — and how they get a second life through recycling. From our train presentation teams, to our waste segregation officers, our colleagues make us industry leaders in sustainability. Since 2018, we have sent zero waste to landfill. We also recycle more than any other train operator in the UK.
