Social mobility programmes at DWP
Social Mobility is about ensuring fairness across society so people of all backgrounds get equal opportunities, and everyone has the chance to go as far as their talent and hard work will take them.
DWP and the Civil Service is at its best when it reflects the diversity of the country. When people from diverse backgrounds are involved in creating and delivering the public services we all rely on, we build better services that work for everyone.
Research shows that diversity in teams brings increased customer insight, which helps us in meeting the needs of a diverse and constantly changing population.
Social Mobility Employer Index 2023
DWP was revealed as being in the top ten of employers committed to improving on socioeconomic diversity, ranking tenth (up 12 places from 2022) on the Social Mobility Employer Index 2023.
The Social Mobility Employer Index evaluates employers across seven areas and benchmarks them against each other. Areas evaluated include employers’ work with young people, recruitment and selection and progression of colleagues. This evaluation is then used to create a ranking of the 75 top-performing employers.

DWP is delighted to have won an Organisation of the Year Award and be finalists in the Rising Star and Progression Programme categories at the seventh annual UK Social Mobility Awards.
