Inclusivity at Office for Nuclear Regulation

ONR wants to employ a workforce that reflects the diversity of society in which we seek to protect people from harm. Our colleagues are from all walks of life with varied personal experiences and career journeys into ONR including:

We offer a diverse range of careers with offices across Bootle, Cheltenham, and central London. We want the best people for our roles. As an inclusive employer we value individuals’ contributions, regardless of their age, gender, race, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, social background, religion, or belief. Our values ‘supportive, open-minded, fair and accountable’ are central to this.

Our people processes and policies have been independently reviewed, assessed and accredited through several well-respected diversity and inclusion accreditation frameworks, including:

Examples of our commitment in action include:

  • Our guaranteed interview scheme for candidates with a disability who meet the essential criteria for a role.
  • Making reasonable adjustments and adaptations to ensure the recruitment process is inclusive and barrier-free. For example, providing job descriptions in alternative formats, and providing communication support and accessible venues. If you would like to discuss how we can support you, please email [email protected]
  • ‘Name-anonymised’ recruitment, which supports diversity in the workforce by helping to create a more level playing field in the assessment process.

We appreciate that if you’re thinking about joining us you may be interested in understanding how we support you.

National Equality Standard

We are delighted to be recognised for our commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion by gaining accreditation to the National Equality Standard (NES).

This is a great achievement for ONR and is all down to the dedication, passion and hard work of our people who are committed to strengthening our culture of diversity and inclusion.  The accreditation is clear confirmation that we put our people first and value the diversity of ideas, views and contributions from all of our people, regardless of their background, experiences or role, something we’re incredibly proud of.

Our areas of strength were identified as us having:

  • a strategy – D&I is included within strategic theme three: 'Creating a culture of inclusion and excellence' within our Strategy 2020-25;
  • an engagement survey - our surveys contain key questions relating to D&I, such as “I feel I belong within ONR”, and appropriate actions are taken in response to the findings;
  • strong disclosure rate data - After several successful data disclosure campaigns, we have a disclosure rate of 91.7%;
  • mental health & wellbeing is strong - continuous efforts to supporting the mental health and wellbeing of staff, e.g. Mental Health First Aiders, Confidential Support Network, Employee Assistance Programme;
  • culture - the values and behaviours required to promote an inclusive culture are clearly identified and embedded within the performance appraisal process; and
  • policies and practices - we have a comprehensive suite of D&I policies available to employees, which are clear and easy to follow. These include transitioning at work, gender reassignment, bullying and harassment, and menopause.
