Home & Flexible Working at Ministry of Defence – Navy Command

MOD supports flexible working arrangements that help employees balance work and personal commitments, while ensuring business needs continue to be met. Flexible working may relate to how working hours are arranged, where work is carried out, or a combination of both. Availability will depend on the role, operational requirements and line manager agreement.

Employees may discuss flexible working options with their line manager. These may include informal arrangements, formal flexible working requests, part-time working, job sharing, compressed hours, term-time working or partial retirement, where suitable for the role and business area.

Flexible working options

Depending on the role, examples of flexible working arrangements may include:

  • part-time working, where employees work fewer than full-time hours;
  • compressed hours, where full-time hours are worked over fewer days;
  • term-time or part-year working, where agreed working patterns apply for part of the year;
  • job sharing, where two people share the duties of one role;
  • hybrid working, where work is carried out through a blend of workplace attendance and home working, where appropriate.

PLEASE NOTE: In all cases employees will require line manager agreement to work flexibly. Managers are encouraged to support flexible working where it can be accommodated by the business, but employees should be mindful that some options may not be practical for some jobs and they should work with line managers to agree a pattern that works for the business as well as themselves.
