Ex-Armed Forces & Veterans at SWR

Over the course of the Summer 2025, South Western Railway has been involved in military events all demonstrating our commitment to the Armed Forces covenant and military community.

We celebrated Armed Forces Week at Waterloo Station on 25 June 2025.  Veterans and reservists supported the event along with some military band pipers who played some great tunes.  SSAFA were also fundraising and noted it was their most successful community engagement event to date.

We have continued our involvement in Military Transition Courses during July offering career insight along with application and interview advice.  We hosted some military personnel at our Basingstoke Campus where they had a tour of Control, time on the driver simulators along with a chance to have mock interview practice.

On 05 August we arranged for a group of 15 Royal Air Force Cadets to visit Salisbury Station and Salsibury Traincare depot.  After a tour and an insight into railway careers they had a session on employability covering skills and CV writing techniques.

On 17 October 2024, South Western Railway attended the awards ceremony for the Employer Recognition Scheme where we were presented with the Silver Award.  The award demonstrates our commitment to the Armed Forces Community supporting veterans, service leavers, reservists and military families.

We are now going for Gold!

In November we held a joint South Western Railway and Network Rail careers insight event in Basingstoke hosting over 30 attendees.  This event gives a great insight into the different roles on the railway with a tour of Control, time on train driver simulators, a min careers fairs with subject matter experts attending most of which have a military background and also an engineering talk.

This year the Recruitment Team at South Western Railway supported the fundraising for the Poppy Appeal in Southampton and London.
