Equality in Camden at Camden Council

Equality in Camden - Sharing information and best practice on all things equality in Camden.

We have an ambitious equality agenda to address the needs of people who have traditionally been disadvantaged or treated less favourably because they are part of a protected group – age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, sex and sexual orientation.

Information on our approach to equality and the work we are doing to meet the Public-Sector Equality Duty can be found on the Council website.

We have a number of equality objectives which help direct our work to tackle inequality in the borough.  Our objectives are:

  • Protect the social mix of the borough supporting all our communities to get on well together;
  • Improve the employment chances for Camden’s most economically disadvantaged groups;
  • Prioritise support to those most in need, informed by a greater understanding of all our communities;
  • Ensure all residents have access to the help they need to resolve their problem Increase the opportunity for all Camden residents to fulfil their potential and participate in the renewal of the borough;
  • Promote staff development and career progression across the organisation to ensure equality of promotion prospects (workforce objective).

We have also published equality information on our website that demonstrates how we are achieving our objectives. We have also produced guidance on equality monitoring.

A key element of our approach is undertaking an equality impact assessment (EIA) when we are developing or reviewing any policy, service, activity or decision. EIAs are central to service improvement and planning and help to ensure we are taking the needs of all our residents and other customers into account.

At Camden Council, everyone should be treated with dignity and respect at work. We will not accept bullying and harassment in Camden and our dignity at work policy helps us all deal with these issues.
