Commitment to Trans Equality at Camden Council

In our Commitment to Trans Equality, we set out to create a workplace where all our trans staff are able to bring their best selves to work.

We recently updated this statement to include detailed guidance for managers and colleagues whose team member is transitioning and how to support them. This includes; building an understanding of what it means to be Trans, policy and advice to enable good quality conversations, practical steps that managers will need to take and how to be a good ally.

We have also added a list of internal and external resources that trans staff may wish to access to receive further support such as:

  • Time off - We’ll give a reasonable amount of paid time off work for any medical appointments associated with your transition, including counselling. (this will also be treated separately to time off for sickness absence).
  • Changing your records - when you’re ready, you can change your identity through our self-service HR system which includes name and title. You can also add the gender you best identify with. Your manager will also liaise with IT to ensure your change of identity on our systems security pass.
  • Letting people know - when the time is right for you, you can decide who knows and who tells them.
  • Facilities - It’s the small things that can sometimes cause the most stress. It is up to you to decide which gender toilet you wish to use when the time is right.
  • Support available – you may wish to access a range of internal and external resources and servicesLGBT+ staff network, Occupational health referral, mental health support and external providers.

Here’s what Jenny Rowlands, our Chief Executive, has to share:

“Our work here at Camden continues to ensure we’re truly inclusive and everyone feels safe, supported and respected, and an essential part of that is building our understanding of trans equality.

We have set out our commitment to trans equality, which has been praised as having really clear and supportive guidance by Stonewall.

In November 2021, we were thrilled to unveil our transgender crossing at the junction of Tavistock Place and Marchmont Street, to show our solidarity with our trans communities and celebrate the diversity that makes Camden so special. I’m sending my support and solidarity to our trans and LGBTQ+ community here at Camden.”
