Anti-racism training at Camden Council

Anti-racism training offering
Becoming a truly inclusive organisation is one of Camden’s highest priorities. In August 2020, we launched our Race Equality Action Plan and committed to delivering our first Anti-Racism Learning Offer across the organisation. The objectives of the learning offer are to enable us all to understand all forms of racism, its prevalence in societally and institutionally, and the impact this has for individuals.

The delivery of our Anti-Racism Learning Offer began in May 2021 and was a collaboration between our partners in this work, In Diverse Company, and Camden colleagues ran Education sessions for all staff, as well as additional sessions for managers.

What we learned

We wanted to understand the impact of this work, as well as what we need to be doing to continue anti-racism learning across the organisation. To do this, we commissioned a full evaluation report.

Below is some feedback we received:
“I’m hearing a lot of examples from colleagues who are calling people out, and I’m like ‘yes!’ It is so great”
Sandra Soteriou, Commissioning Engagement Lead

“Yes, the training and all the facilitation in sessions has been great at pushing the anti-racism message but also I feel it’s been great at giving people an opportunity to self-reflect. And lots of people are saying ‘even now I listen more, or I ask a question and I wait before getting the answer.’ Little things like that are so important and it’s started a culture shift.”
Naila Hirani, Camden Facilitator

Our next steps

We are still on the beginning of our journey to become a truly inclusive, anti-racist organisation and it is imperative we continue the organisation-wide learning we have started. Our next steps are:

  • Bringing together a team to deliver the next phase of the work
  • Delivering face-to-face sessions
  • Delivering a bespoke session to Council Members
  • Embedding the learning across the organisation
  • Conducting our next staff Inclusion Pulse Survey
