Liverpool Pride was set up in 2010 in response to the aftermath of the murder of young gay man Michael Causer in 2008.

The publication of Liverpool City Council’s Stormbreak report in 2006 had already detailed the difficulties that LGBT people were facing whilst living in Merseyside, with 59% of respondents detailing experiencing homophobic or trans*phobic crimes against themselves. The report also noted that funding of LGBT organisations within the city was very poor at that time.

After Michael’s death and a homophobic attack on an off-duty Policeman in the gay quarter in 2009, community activists organised a highly successful vigil on Stanley Street and a well-attended Anti-Homophobia March.

At the same time, Liverpool City Council set up the Liverpool LGBT Network who were tasked with conducting research to see what the LGBT communities felt would help better their position. Their first response was that they would like to see the reintroduction of a Pride event within the city, at that time the largest city in the UK not to have one, despite there having been earlier events in the 1980’s and 1990’s.
