As part of Black History Month, Zurich's Cultural Awareness Network("CAN") hosted an event to raise awareness of the African Caribbean Leukaemia Trust ("ACLT").
Co- founder of ACLT, Orin Lewis OBE, told the inspiring story about how his son, Daniel, became the first black individual in the UK to receive a stem cell transplant from an unrelated donor. The event raised awareness of how people of an African Caribbean background have a 20% chance of finding a suitable match as opposed to White Northern Europeans who at best have a 90% chance. At the event attendees had the opportunity to sign up to the blood, stem cell or organ registers or all three!
19 people signed up to the register at the Zurich event and leading the way was Zurich’s Head of UK General Insurance, Conor Brennan.
The astonishing thing is…. to register takes less than 5 mins of your time. If you are a match and agree to become a stem cell donor, it is a non-invasive, 3 hour process that could potentially save someone’s life!
