About International Women’s Day
Marked annually on March 8th, International Women's Day (IWD) is one of the most important days of the year to celebrate women's achievements, raise awareness about women's equality, lobby for accelerated gender parity and fundraise for female-focused charities.
The campaign theme for International Women's Day 2022 is #BreakTheBias. Whether deliberate or unconscious, bias makes it difficult for women to move ahead. Knowing that bias exists isn't enough. Action is needed to level the playing field.
Nicola Adams OBE Boxing Workshop
Monday 7th March 2022 saw local legend and Olympian, Nicola Adams OBE lead a boxing workshop with aspiring girls in the same area where Nicola trained as a young athlete. Supported by students from Leeds Beckett University, girls learned about boxing and were able to talk to Nicola about her road to success.
TikTok star Charmane Isabella, also known as charsbusbanter, is just one of the women who is #BreakingTheBias as one of our regions bus drivers. "I'm really proud so many women in West Yorkshire have chosen a career in transport to provide a vital service for our communities."
What are we doing?
The Mayor of West Yorkshire, Tracy Brabin, and Deputy for Policing and Crime, Alison Lowe, are proud to support International Women’s Day, with not just one day, but an entire week of activities highlighting the achievements of women of West Yorkshire.
