World Cancer Day – An update on the Working with Cancer Pledge

Category: Wellbeing (Financial/Mental/Physical)

Wellbeing

In September 2023, I was delighted to support Defence in becoming the first government department to commit to the worldwide working with cancer pledge. As someone who is currently in remission, this is a subject very close to my heart.

An international awareness day led by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) to raise worldwide attention and inspire action

At that time, I also asked you to complete an anonymous survey to give us information on how you have been supported by the Department - whether you have had a cancer diagnosis, are caring, or line managing someone who has.

The good news is that the areas that you identified as needing improvement coincide with many of the items on our #workingwithcancer pledge action plan, which we will be progressing during the course of the year.

We promised to update you on the pledge on World Cancer Day and I am delighted to report the following:

  • I have and will continue to raise awareness with my peers and senior leaders across Defence.
  • For Civil Servants using MyHR, it is anticipated that the option of recording ‘Long Term Health Condition, Diseases, or illness’ as a disability on MyHR will be available, and
  • I am very excited to tell you that the Defence Cancer Support Network is working with key stakeholders including HR, DBS and D&I as part of a Community of Interest group throughout 2024 to identify areas where policy and practice can be improved.

While I look forward to updating you on progress in future blogs, the Community of Interest is identifying ways in which we can improve communication and awareness around support for anyone affected by cancer.

The Defence Cancer Support Network is also seeking a new Champion, at to support their work in raising awareness and creating change. The champion will be someone who has a passion for supporting those affected by cancer, whether they have been diagnosed, or are a carer, line manager, friend, or colleague.

I hope that your year has started in a positive and healthy way. Should you need any support, please refer to the Health and Wellbeing portal for further information.
