Brit Spotlight: Jennifer shares her experience working with Dyslexia at Brit

Jennifer Farrington-Bell, Head of Risk Planning and Capital Strategy shares her experience working with Dyslexia.

Including how it has positively impacted her work.

Like many people I have Dyslexia. While it is something that can have a major workplace impact, it is not that well understood. In the past, it is not something I have been forthcoming about. I’m more comfortable talking about it now because I’m at a point in my career where it doesn’t impact me to the same degree.

Dyslexia can result in a totally different experience of reading and articulating language. For example, when I read, I have to clearly pronounce every word in my head which means I’m far slower than the average person. It’s also important to emphasise that along with challenges come strengths.

It does of course still impact how I work, and some things will always be more difficult. However, on the positive side I’ve been told that I’m good at presenting and putting together explanations. I believe that comes from dyslexia as I often have to go back to basics or use visualisations when digesting written information.

I’m pleased to say things have improved a lot since I first started working, and there is good support available at Brit as well as our workplace adjustments policy.
