Interviews are challenging. Butterflies in your stomach, fear of the unexpected, eagerness to perform well and be successful. Those feelings can be exacerbated if you’re met by an interview panel that you cannot relate to and find difficult to build rapport and an understanding with.
At DCMS we are committed to having diverse interview panels at every grade we recruit.
Here, we have made it mandatory for there to be a gender-balanced interview panel, for there to have an independent panel member with no bias or agenda, and to have representation by someone from an under-represented group. This could be an individual that is disabled, BAME, from a lower-socio economic background, or an individual who identifies as gay/lesbian/bisexual.
Why? Diversity of thought, opinion and background is so important to ensure candidates are being assessed fairly, with the absence of any unconscious bias, and on merit alone. We also think, having someone in an interview panel that you may be able to see yourself in, or relate to in some way, can help you feel more at ease and thus perform at your best.
Why not apply for a role at DCMS and see this approach in practice yourself?
