What is unconscious bias in the workplace?

Category: Returnships (Returning to work)

Diversity and Inclusion

Unconscious bias is a phenomenon in which people unknowingly hold stereotypes or preconceived notions about certain groups of people. This can result in unfair treatment of individuals based on factors such as race, gender, age, or other personal characteristics. In the workplace, unconscious bias can have negative consequences for both employees and the organisation. In this response, I will explain what unconscious bias is, how it can manifest in the workplace, and strategies for addressing unconscious bias.

Unconscious bias is a natural human tendency that results from the brain's need to process information quickly. Our brains use shortcuts, or mental heuristics, to make quick decisions without consciously thinking through every detail. These shortcuts can lead to biases when they are based on inaccurate or incomplete information.

In the workplace, unconscious bias can manifest in a variety of ways. For example, a manager may unconsciously favour employees who are similar to themselves in terms of gender or race, without realizing they are doing so. This can lead to unequal treatment of employees and a lack of diversity in leadership positions.

Unconscious bias can also impact hiring decisions. For example, a recruiter may unconsciously prefer candidates who went to the same university as themselves, or who have similar hobbies or interests. This can result in a less diverse workforce and can also mean that qualified candidates are overlooked because they don't fit the recruiter's preconceived notions.

In order to address unconscious bias in the workplace, it is important to first recognize that it exists. Many people are unaware of their own biases, so it is important to raise awareness and provide education on the topic. This can involve training sessions for employees and managers, as well as providing resources such as articles or books that explore the topic.

Another strategy for addressing unconscious bias is to implement processes and procedures that reduce the potential for bias. For example, blind resume screening can help eliminate bias in hiring decisions by removing identifying information such as name and address from resumes. Structured interviews can also help ensure that all candidates are asked the same questions in the same order, reducing the potential for bias in the interview process.

It is also important to promote diversity and inclusivity in the workplace. This can involve actively recruiting candidates from underrepresented groups, providing diversity and inclusion training for all employees, and creating a culture that values diversity and encourages open dialogue about bias and discrimination.

Finally, it is important to hold people accountable for their actions. This can involve setting clear expectations for behaviour and taking action when those expectations are not met. For example, if a manager is found to be treating employees unfairly based on unconscious bias, they should be held accountable and provided with support and training to address their bias.

In conclusion, unconscious bias is a natural human tendency that can lead to unfair treatment of individuals based on personal characteristics such as race, gender, and age. In the workplace, unconscious bias can impact hiring decisions, leadership positions, and employee morale. To address unconscious bias, it is important to recognize its existence, provide education and training on the topic, implement processes and procedures that reduce the potential for bias, promote diversity and inclusivity, and hold people accountable for their actions. By doing so, organizations can create a more equitable and inclusive workplace for all employees.
