Pauline Holmes – Performance Programme Coordiantor

What is your role at British Athletics?

I’ve spent the last 25 years working within the sport of Track & Field Athletics. First as a receptionist and currently as a Performance Co-ordinator, working on team logistics. My current role has enabled me to travel as team management and witness the development of athletes from junior to elite and in some cases as Olympic medal winners.

What does Black History Month mean to you?

Black history month for me is a time to reflect, celebrate and share stories so that the many achievements of black people are recognised. “A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots.”.

The names of those who persevered in the face of oppression are now embedded in history, and are synonymous with change and achievement; this for me is a good reason to remember and celebrate Black History month.

What black individual do you most admire in history?

Who do I admire most? – Martin Luther King, some may say he was a dreamer “I Have a Dream.”  but dreams can become a reality, provided this is coupled with actions, as is evident in the many changes which came about through Martin Luther King’s vision and actions.

My black athlete in the history of athletics in Britain is…

Linford Christie OBE

Born in Jamaica on 2 April 1960, Linford Cicero Christie was a former sprinter now athletics coach.

He is the only British man to have won gold medals in the 100 metres at all four major competitions open to British athletes: the Olympic Games, the World Championships, the European Championships and the Commonwealth Games.

He was the first European to break the 10-second barrier in the 100 m and still holds the British record in the event. He is a former world indoor record holder over 200 metres, and a former European record holder in the 60 metres, 100 m and 4 × 100 metres relay.

With 24 major championship medals including 10 gold medals, he is the most decorated British male athlete.
