Business Change Manager tells her story of Dyslexia, Dyspraxia and Dyscalculia at TransPennine Express

A TransPennine Express (TPE) Business Change Manager has shared her story as part of Neurodiversity Awareness Month.

Joanna Bentley, who is part of the Major Projects Team based in Manchester, detailed her inspiring story in a video to raise awareness of neurodiverse conditions.

In the video, Joanna explains how each of the three conditions affects her within the workplace, but also how she sees them as a strength. . Joanna describes how she can find it difficult to process information and write notes while in meetings,  and how converting large numbers in text into spoken numbers can also be a challenge. 

However, in interviews, Joanna highlights her dyslexia as a strength, explaining how her experience gives her the  innate ability to know  how it feels not to understand, and she is therefore able to convert information to others in a diverse range of ways. 

TPE announced the official launch of its ‘Neurodiversity Network Group’ in January 2024. Joanna is an active member of the group and explains why she joined in the video. She says: “I want people to feel encouraged that this is a great place to work and that you shouldn’t ever feel any shame about any of your learning difficulties…it’s all just really positive.” 

TPE is currently a Level 2 Disability Confident Employer and provides colleagues with Neurodiversity Training – delivered by The Brain Trust - in a bid to best support current colleagues and raise awareness of the reasonable adjustments available.
