Top tips for jobseekers with disabilities

Welcome to our latest piece on employment and recruitment when you have a disability. This month we’re looking at ways to find the perfect job for you. In 2019, 51.7% of people with disabilities in the UK were in employment. That’s up from 50.7% a year previously. The Government’s target is to have 4.5 million people with disabilities in employment by 2027.

Starting to look for a job

The best jobs are those that reflect and develop the parts of yourself that you enjoy. Take a piece of paper and write three lists.

  • What are you interested in? You could consider thinking about what you like to read, or watch, or places you like to go. Add things that you enjoy doing. This can help you understand the jobs would reflect the parts of you that make you happy.
  • What are you good at? Things as simple as enjoying jigsaw puzzles can be a good indicator that you’ve got an analytical mind? Are there any parts of your favourite hobbies that could translate into the workplace. Are you creative? Or good with people? Write down the things that make you feel good about yourself.
  • What are your skills? Think about the training or qualifications you have already completed. Or places where you think you would like to grow professionally. Remember to include any special equipment or computer programmes you can use.

Help with getting a job

  • Think about the opportunities around you and do some research into employers that you are interested in. Companies are now more aware of the benefits of diverse workplaces than ever. Look for employers whose websites and job adverts proudly state they are an equal opportunities employer.   • Reach out to people around you. Lots of people find great work through recommendations and tips from those they know. Use your Linkedin and in-person to contacts to benefit from your community’s knowledge.
