DCMS recently launched their hybrid working policy, now that all COVID restrictions have been lifted. This enables DCMS staff to enjoy the benefits of working from home and in the office, whilst ensuring business needs are met. This policy requires full time staff to go into their contracted DCMS office a minimum of twice a week, then have the flexibility to work from home for the rest of the week.
The COVID-19 pandemic has proved that employees can work efficiently and effectively from home, however there are some fantastic benefits to implementing a hybrid working model.
Benefits of hybrid working at DCMS
1. Working in the office enables staff to collaborate far more easily and organically. It creates an opportunity to share ideas spontaneously and seek feedback and advice from team members across the desk. DCMS have the technology to enable collaboration virtually too - but it’s great to have a mix of the two.
2. Stronger rapport and relationships can be built with colleagues when you have the opportunity to meet and socialise in person. There are opportunities for office “chit chat” and to grab lunch together. There are breakout areas in all of the DCMS hubs for employees to connect with their colleagues.
3. The beauty of hybrid working ensures that staff can manage their personal and professional lives far more easily. In addition to hybrid working, DMCS operates a flexible working policy which grants employees flexibility over the hours they work (outside of core hours). The combination of the two ensures a work-life balance is more than attainable at DCMS.
4. We have learnt that working from home can be beneficial when you need to “get your head down” and focus. It’s beneficial having the benefit of working from home and the office and dedicating certain tasks to certain days. For example, if you’re drafting a report you might decide to do this on your home working day, but if you’re doing something more creative then having the energy of others in the office may be helpful. However, DCMS has introduced new Quiet Zones in our London office to enable employees to have that focus time should it be required.
DCMS understands that the move from 100% remote working during the pandemic, to hybrid working may impact upon people differently. Therefore, DMCS have put a number of mechanisms in place to support staff such as support from DCMS Mental Health Champions and the DCMS’ Staff Network - the Mental Health and Wellbeing Network, which all DCMS employees can access. There is also a comprehensive hybrid working toolkit available with tips and advice and line managers are having conversations with their teams on a 1-2-1 basis.
