The importance of community at Sopra Steria

Lauren shares their thoughts on the importance of companies creating safe spaces for their people

Something that I have been thinking about a lot recently is the importance of having a space for people who have a shared understanding of experiences. As human beings, we need human connection, and I think there is nothing more valuable than connecting with someone who can empathise with your life experiences, and also offer their own.

As a queer person, I have found that joining groups with other queer people has been hugely important to me. The relief I felt the first time I could simply tell another queer person that I’m asexual, without having to go into detail about what that means, made me realise just how much having spaces like this means to me. The simple act of a conversation where both people are on the same page from the start is something that can be life-changing for some.

I’m very glad to be working for a company that offers this in our PLUS Network. This network offers employees a safe space to speak with colleagues who understand what it is like to be openly queer in a work environment, welcoming anyone who would like support and friendship. In the network, people are able to engage with a community of peers in whichever way they feel most comfortable, which is something I never imagined I would be able to experience in my work life. There are regular meetings where everyone can catch up, and where everyone’s voice matters, no matter what your role in the company is. 

More and more companies are now offering similar networks and communities for their employees, and I think this is a great step to making sure employees feel safe and supported at work, as well as valued.
