Siobhan Hayden, Financial Accountant at Brit, explains what Pride means to her – and the importance of a work environment where people are comfortable as their true self.
I’ve been at Brit just over two years and am really loving it. I never get that ‘Monday morning’ feeling; in fact, I come to work every day thinking ‘I love my job’. It’s such a gift to work here, engaging with my team and other stakeholders and being able to get involved in so many initiatives.
There’s a genuine culture of inclusivity at Brit – and the fact that you really can bring your whole self to work is amazing. We really communicate with each other; we can have difficult conversations but also have a laugh together, while still being professional.
To me, Pride is about being accepting of everyone, no matter their orientation. It’s about creating a culture that allows us all to stand up and say who we are. Pride brings so much awareness of what’s out there. We’re all different, we’re all unique and we’re all special.
Whilst I’m very comfortable in saying who I am, others don’t always have this confidence. I got involved with the LGBTQ group at Brit because I wanted to do more. A little more support and empathy can go a long way towards making people feel included. As the conversation keeps going, I hope and believe a lot of people will start being more open.
