Hi, I’m Joanne and I have found that working in the Civil Service with the Army, talent opportunities are all around us.
I joined MOD in January 2020 and as part of the offer was given the opportunity to complete a HR apprenticeship. For someone fast approaching 50 and looking for a new career this just seemed to be too good an opportunity to miss, so I jumped at the chance, and I have not looked back! I completed my apprenticeship in 14 months and gained a world-wide recognised formal qualification from CIPD and not only did MOD pay the apprenticeship fees, I was given one day off a week (20% off the job learning) to complete the required study. I was fully support by my own team and the wider MOD community. For anyone thinking about joining MOD and taking an apprenticeship, go for it, it offers fantastic learning opportunities, and you don’t need to stop there.
After a 6-month break from learning, I applied for a place on the new internal MOD talent scheme RISE. The scheme offers leadership development and opportunities to increase knowledge and experience in Defence. I have just completed the scheme which ran for a year, and it included bitesize learning, learning about other professions in Defence, Action Learning sets, mentoring and interview practice. The scheme allowed me to think about my career and spend time on personal development, learn about managing/developing others and delivering results. It has been a great year which has resulted in my getting a promotion! So, what’s next…….?
