Ramadan at Work: Fostering Inclusion and Understanding in the MOD

Religious Beliefs

As the holy month of Ramadan begins, we recognise and support our Muslim colleagues across the Ministry of Defence (MOD) who will be observing this sacred period of fasting, reflection, and community.

We support our Muslim colleagues across the Ministry of Defence (MOD)

Ramadan is a significant time in the Islamic calendar, marked by fasting from dawn to sunset, increased prayer, and acts of charity.

At the Race Network, we are committed to fostering an inclusive and supportive workplace where all colleagues feel valued, respected, and empowered to observe their faith without barriers.

Here’s how we can all play a part in creating a positive environment during this special month:

Understanding the Importance of Ramadan.

  • For those who may be unfamiliar, Ramadan is a time for self-discipline, spiritual growth, and compassion. During this month, many of our Muslim colleagues will refrain from eating or drinking during daylight hours while balancing work and personal commitments.

Offering Consideration and Flexibility.

  • Where possible, we encourage line managers and teams to be mindful of the challenges fasting colleagues may face. This can be supported by:
  • Allowing flexible working hours where operational requirements permit.
  • Being considerate when scheduling meetings, particularly late in the afternoon when energy levels may be lower.
  • Recognising that some colleagues may need to take breaks to pray or rest.

Encouraging Open Conversations.

  • A simple acknowledgment of Ramadan can go a long way in making Muslim colleagues feel supported. Asking questions in a respectful and open manner can help break barriers and encourage a more inclusive culture.

Creating an Inclusive Workplace.

  • Inclusivity is about small but meaningful gestures, such as:
  • Avoiding assumptions—some Muslims may be fasting, while others may not for various reasons.
  • Respecting prayer times and offering quiet spaces where possible.
  • Being mindful when eating or drinking in front of fasting colleagues while ensuring they do not feel isolated.

Celebrating Together: Eid al-Fitr.

  • At the end of Ramadan, Muslims celebrate Eid al-Fitr, a joyous occasion that marks the end of fasting. We encourage teams to join in the celebrations by learning about its significance, sharing greetings, or even organizing an inclusive event.

Our Commitment to Inclusion.

  • The Race Network is here to support and champion the voices of all communities within the MOD, by promoting awareness, respect, and practical support, we can continue building a workplace that embraces diversity and unity.

To all our Muslim colleagues observing Ramadan, we wish you Ramadan Mubarak - may this month bring you peace, strength, and fulfilment.

Let’s stand together in support and make MOD a more inclusive place for all.
