Staffordshire: 'Get Started programme' is a hit!

Thirteen young people from Cannock have completed the third Prince’s Trust ‘Get Started’ programme in partnership with Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service.

The five-day programme helped young people aged between 16-25 to experience different aspects of the fire and rescue service, improve their soft skills and to establish and sustain a positive outcome in volunteering, education, employment or training.

The young people were joined by ‘Poi Passion’ for part of the course when they were taught the graceful and rhythmic movement of poi. They were also treated to a fire spinning demonstration. The hypnotic movement is believed to build confidence, co-ordination and an experiential understanding of the balance of left and right side of the body.

At the end of the week the group had a ‘Celebration of Success’ event where local employers and family members got the chance to see what they had learnt during the programme.

Prince’s Trust Delivery Partner Manager James Hettihewa-Young said: “The young people did extremely well with each individual gaining a valuable insight into the work of the fire and rescue service. The programme provides support to young people who may have difficult backgrounds and need help with their initial career steps. As a Service we are committed to making a real and positive difference to their lives.”
