Siemens introduces pronouns to their IT systems

In an increasingly inclusive world, where differences are progressively accepted and embraced, it is also more and more essential to adapt our language to the changes that are taking place every day.

It’s easy to get lost in language, and it’s easy to fall into the assumption that we think we know how everyone would like to be treated. And this is where inclusive language comes to our assistance.

At Siemens, we favor a culture of openness and acceptance, where we insist that everyone is true to who they are and where we treat each other with mutual respect and inclusion.

That’s why we are introducing the so-called “Gender Pronouns” into our Siemens IT systems!

But first… What are Gender Pronouns?

Pronouns act as a substitute and often a shortened form of other nouns. When referring to people, they are used instead of a person’s name.

There are gender-specific pronouns (He/He and She/She) and non-binary pronouns (They/Them). There are also individuals who use a combination of both (e.g. She/They). *

Why are Inclusive Gender Pronouns important, and why is it important to use them?

If someone uses a gender-neutral pronoun, that means they have discovered that who they are on the inside, their identity, cannot be encapsulated by binary gender pronouns.

It is a measure of respect for that person to use their chosen pronouns, whatever they may be.

And the best way to figure out how to address them is to simply ask “What pronouns do you use?” or “What pronouns should I use for you?”

Inclusion is always an important conversation. And so is making people feel accepted and included. And that can be achieved through a simple direct question.

By using Inclusive Gender Pronouns correctly, people are showing respect and forming an inclusive environment, which in turn, will reduce the adverse effects of social oppression.

And, ultimately, that is what we aim for at Siemens.

Which is why Gender Pronouns are coming to Siemens!

The Gender Pronouns can now be used and displayed within the IT systems!

We want to support each and every one of our people, so they can be their truest self. And to do so, from October 11th onward, everyone can display their own pronouns, choosing from he/his, she/her, and they/them as an international term on “Workday” or “Siemens Corporate Directory (SCD)”.

We are moving towards a place of full inclusion and acceptance where #belongingtransforms.

Are you coming with us?

*This is not the complete list of pronouns, only a few examples.
