It would be reasonable to presume that companies would be reluctant to hire employees that may need adaptations or extra equipment to do their jobs. Does that mean you’re at a disadvantage as a disabled jobseeker?
Well, for a start, the cost thing isn’t true. Workplace accommodations are often low cost, and positively impact the workplace in many ways. These could be changes like scheduling flexibility, or allowances in dress code. Search now for vacancies with disability-friendly employers.
Persons with disabilities in the workplace
Meanwhile, a recent study has shown that companies that championed people with disabilities outperformed others. In fact, their revenues were 28% higher, net income 200% higher, and profit margins 30% higher. Companies that engage in disability inclusion were four times more likely to see higher returns for shareholders. Diversity has a great impact on the bottom line. We need to spread the message, as employers, as employees, as disability advocates.
This is important information for both employers and jobseekers. Employers reported that providing accommodations has allowed them to keep valuable employees, improve productivity and morale, and benefit from low absenteeism rates and long tenures. Meanwhile, the diversification of work settings more widely creates a more positive work environment.
Diversity in the workplace
Employers can also see the benefits of a diverse workforce in the way their customers and partners understand them. Hiring practices reveal salient information about a company’s core values. The composition of the workforce speaks to a company’s identity. It tells your customers, employees, and other stakeholders that your organization cares about diversity and about having an environment that is accessible to all.
There are also supply line and satisfaction benefits to inclusion strategies. We need to make more of these, to tell people’s stories. Improving disabled access to work, and so improving quality of income (and potentially life) needs visibility. That means getting people into great work and allowing them to thrive. We’re proud to be supporting hundreds of firms and organisations trying to do just that. Check out our employer profiles showcasing the hard work our partners are doing on inclusive recruitment in their sector.
