Sadiq Khan unveiled his plans for a year long initiative to end the gender pay gap at Platanos College in Stockwell recently. He talked of his campaign #Behindeverygreatcity to address the fight for gender parity in London. The campaign coincides with the 1918 Representation of the People Act which sees it's 100th anniversery in 2018. As part of the campaign and to celebrate London's role in womens suffrage, the first statue of a woman, suffragist leader Millicent Fawcett interpreted by Turner Prize-winning artist Gillian Wearing, will be unveiled in Parliament Square in spring 2018.
Transport for London are also marking this 100th anniversary with their Art on the Underground- Transport for London's public art programme - will represent works only by female artists for the entire year. Eleanor Pinfield, head of Art on the Underground, says: "The 2018 programme is an opportunity to bring artists of an international renown to the spaces of our city - not because of, or in spite of, or in celebration of gender. But, because these artists have powerful voices for today and question dominant power structures of the city in myriad ways."
"A big part of it is changing the stereotypes, changing prejudices that people have," he said. "I passionately believe that it can't just be a fight for girls and women, it's got to be all of us." Men are just as important to this campaign as women, it's impossible to achieve success when half of us are being held back. This is something VERCIDA believes also and advocates strongly. VERCIDA earlier this year launched an online campaign of their own #Endthepaygap. It's no suprise that all businesses have a gender pay gap, this being smaller than it has ever been, but there is still great potential to make changes in gender parity.
