February is LGBT History Month, which celebrates the lives and achievements of LGBT people and raises awareness of issues they still face.
Royal Mail is a member of Stonewall’s Diversity Champions programme, Britain’s leading employers’ forum on sexual orientation.
Stonewall campaigns for legal and social equality for LGBT people. It has successfully campaigned to secure legislation protecting LGBT people from discrimination in the workplace, as well as equality for same-sex couples wanting to adopt and, more recently, the introduction of civil partnerships and equal marriage.
Simon Feeke, Stonewall’s director of workplace programmes says: ‘We’re delighted that the Royal Mail Group recently joined our Diversity Champions programme, demonstrating its commitment to LGBT equality.
‘It has now established the "LGBT and Friends" steering Group – an employee network group for LGBT colleagues and their allies within the Royal Mail.’
‘I’d encourage every staff member to find out more about "LGBT and Friends" and consider how you can make a difference.’
Our 'LGBT and Friends' steering group, which we previously considered calling ‘Jigsaw,’ is sponsored by East operation director Tony Fox.
Tony adds: ‘We are very proud to work closely with Stonewall as a member of their Diversity Champions programme, which provides vital advice to employers keen to support and develop their LGBT staff.
‘LGBT History Month is a time to reflect on how far we have come in terms of equality. It’s about educating and changing attitudes to make way for a society where everyone can achieve their full potential.’
Royal Mail is committed to creating an inclusive workplace in which we respect one another. To find out more about our 'LGBT and Friends' steering group or to get involved email chair of steering group Anna Sargent.
