One year on and another Ramadan during in some form of lockdown restrictions. You may have read my article last year?! When we first went into lockdown, I certainly didn’t think a year on from then we would still have certain restrictions in place
Last Ramadan was tough and the restrictions back in April 2020 meant Mosques were closed and attending meals at other people’s houses to break the fast (Iftar) were not allowed. However, as is generally the case, there are positives to take from it and last Ramadan meant we got to pray at home as a family and allowed me to focus on my personal worship much more than I had in previous years. I was able to devote more time to reciting the Qur’an, supplicating to Allah and in Prayer.
Fast forward to the here and now and whilst restrictions are in place, they are much less strict. Most Mosques are now open and visits to other households are allowed, albeit outdoor. Here’s hoping the weather improves so I can invite some family over for Iftar.
One of the biggest things I missed last year was attending the Mosque for taraweeh prayer. I couldn’t wait for the first prayer the night before Ramadan began. The buzz you feel and the excitement you see on people’s faces can’t really be explained!
Everyone is different and has varying circumstances so it’s important for Line Managers and organisations to have an open discussion with Muslim colleagues (and vice versa) about what important religious months or events mean for individuals. This may be centred around whether they will be fasting, any time off required or change to working patterns. Whatever the case may be, just go have that chat!
