PwC sees apprenticeship application increase

PwC has seen a big increase in the number of students looking to join the firm straight after their A levels, as more students are now actively choosing the apprenticeship career route.

Applications to PwC’s school leaver programmes has risen by 8% compared to the same time last year and by 20% since 2014. So far this year more than 2,000 students have applied for PwC’s 160 school leaver places – that is over four times the number of people who applied in 2008.

In total, a record 45,800 people (126 applicants a day) have applied for PwC’s 3,000 graduate, apprenticeship, school leaver, paid internship and work placement positions this year. This is up from around 41,000 last year.

PwC is committed to widening access to professional services. As well as offering different routes into the profession, the firm removed UCAS points as entry criteria for the majority of graduate jobs last year. This led to an immediate increase in the number of applicants from more diverse backgrounds and a greater diversity of new hires. 72% of PwC’s graduate and student hires in the past year went to state school, up 6 percentage points from 2014, and more than one in 10 come from a household receiving income support.

PwC’s graduate hires are coming from a wider range of universities, with one in three of the new graduates joining from a non-Russell Group university.

Richard Irwin, head of student recruitment at PwC, said:

“Students have never had so much choice over the route they can take into a professional career and many are now actively choosing apprenticeships as an equal alternative to university.

“This is a win-win situation for students and employers. The more paths into an organisation, the more likely employers are to reach the best talent, and students are realising that they don’t necessarily have to go to university to get the best jobs.”

“We are committed to improving the diversity of our student and graduate intake and want to employ the most talented young people, regardless of their backgrounds. We’ve got more work to do here but it’s encouraging that the steps we have taken to widen access to our firm, such as removing UCAS scores as entry criteria, and extending our outreach into schools, are starting to pay off.”
