Apprenticeships

Have you ever considered how a Civil Service Apprenticeship could support you in your development and take your career to the next level?

National Apprenticeship Week (NAW) 2024 is the 17th annual celebration of apprenticeships.

Explore how Defence's Civil Service apprenticeships can grant you vital skills for life – at any grade or ability!

Well National Apprenticeship Week, taking place this week from 5 - 11 February, is your perfect opportunity to explore the extensive offer of apprenticeship programmes from Level 3 up to Level 7 (Master’s Degree) available, consider apprenticeship recruitment, upskilling your team or simply gaining a better understanding of how Civil Service apprenticeships work within MOD.

We am truly committed to creating an organisation where colleagues have the ongoing support and commitment to their development, with so many exciting emerging skills areas at the forefront of building a Defence fit for the future that can be obtained through an apprenticeship programme.

The MOD currently has a whopping 1960 apprentices on programme, spanning 22 profession areas, undertaking apprenticeships in over 90 standards. What an achievement!

Defence continues to be recognised as an exemplar for high quality apprenticeships, with our recent celebration of being awarded Platinum Status of the 5% Club. The 5% Club is a dynamic movement of employer-members working to create a shared prosperity across the UK by driving ‘earn & learn’ skills training opportunities. This achievement highlights the success and determination of our drive to prioritise apprenticeships as an effective tool to building our talent and supporting learning and development. This endorsement not only demonstrates that we are building our brand as an ‘apprentice provider of choice’ but also shows that individuals thrive in an environment where they are given the best experience.

As you can imagine, a lot of work goes into making an apprenticeship a success, and I want to congratulate all those involved in the process, from the Apprenticeship Teams to the line managers who invest their time developing and coaching our apprentices to success and persevering through the challenges that they face.

Lastly, I want to recognise our wonderful apprentices, who in addition to their already busy roles, dedicate their time and effort to their development and study. This shows such resilience to balance many spinning plates in an ever-changing world of work, but I know that this commitment to enhancing their career will pay off dividends alongside displaying their resilience and commendable work ethic.  Well done to you all, congratulations are in order. I look forward to the enthralling week of events, and encourage you to take the time to learn, celebrate and promote apprenticeships in any way that you can.

There is a wide range of events taking place across National Apprenticeship Week 2024 that you can get involved in.

National Apprenticeship Week (NAW) 2024 is the 17th annual celebration of apprenticeships and Defence is hosting its own events in line with the national theme Skills for Life’.

Defence are hosting a number of events that highlight the value, benefit and opportunities apprenticeships bring. By attending you will discover how apprenticeships can boost your career and how line managers can cultivate a workforce with future-ready skills for a fulfilling and rewarding career.

An Apprenticeship is paid employment that combines on-the-job training alongside a development programme. Apprentices gain professional knowledge, practical experience and up to date wider skills with an accredited qualification while in their current role, which ultimately supports career development. They can benefit anyone of any age.
